The Brazilian state of Rio De Janeiro has become the tenth in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage. Marriages conducted in any of these ten states are recognized nationwide.
Same-sex unions are legally recognized in Brazil since 2004. Same-sex couples enjoy the provisions of several constitutional principles and the absence of prohibitive legislation. The Braziliancohabitation (unregistered unions) policy grants rights similar to those granted in heterosexual marriages, including adoption, welfare benefits pension, inheritance tax, income tax, social security,health benefits, immigration, joint property ownership, hospital and prison visitation.
